Art and Architecture a Moving Partnership
September 23, 2024
Through several monumental projects and collaborations with renowned architects Richard Meier, Whipple Russell, and Citterio-Viel, the ever-meaningful relationship between art and architecture has become central to Richard Erdman’s art practice.
Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men, to put man into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word order. -Frank Llyod Wright
Art and architecture, uniquely related, are based in aesthetic communication and perception. While architecture finds itself limited within the confines of practicality, sculpture can exist freely, with the power to punctuate a space with no bounds. As such, sculpture is a perfect partner to architecture, and an architect is exceptionally qualified to commission a sculpture that will elevate their vision.
Sculpture can serve as an evocative portal to an internal and subjective experience, with the potential to enhance an architect’s vision for a specific environment and landscape. Through collaboration and deep aesthetic consideration, the introduction of a form whose function may be abstract, exponentially enriches the texture of architecture on both the individual and collective scale.
“Stone, and particularly Italian marble, is tied to some of the world’s oldest architectural masterpieces. As a sculptor, I am most satisfied when my forms help to shape a full and embodied experience of space. I delight in collaborating closely with architects and landscape designers to effectively harmonize nature, structure, and art.” – Richard Erdman
