Carrara Marble
22 x 20 x 16 inches
A reverence for nature’s cyclical patterns is reflected in the new sculpture Huko, which features a sleek, ribbon-like form made of marble that rises from the earth and returns to it in an organic, wave-like arch. Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s famous Edo period woodcut, “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” (commonly known as “The Great Wave”), Huko and its counterpart Hoku pay tribute not only to the awe-inspiring phenomenon of the tides but also to Hokusai’s ability to capture both sublime elegance and overwhelming power in a single composition. Each form encapsulates these tidal elements: Hoku embodies a confident, breathtaking rise and fall, while the agile twists of Huko suggest the more unpredictable aspects of water in motion. Both, as Hokusai understood, are essential.
